This shop has no clue what they’re talking about when it comes to aftermarket parts. I gave my cousin my old car that I had done some modifications to, which include an aftermarket cold air intake. The car gave her a code saying that it was running rich due to the MAF sensor that I had to strap down to the intake using electrical tape. This is because the intake was made for an earlier year of the car which had a different MAF sensor but same engine. The tape had come loose and after taking it into this shop they told her that was the issue, which it was, but then tried to charge her $800 to replace the entire thing back to the stock intake which makes less power and decreases cold air flow into the engine. I decided that I would come down and fix it myself. When I got there I saw that they had glued and taped the MAF sensor to the intake the wrong way without it plugged in, which was completely unnecessary. I had to get it unstuck and put it back in the correct way and the car started right up with no issues. The MAF sensor just needed to be strapped back down after being on there for about a year and half. Another easy fix is to get the correct sensor that fits the intake which is only $100.
Thank you for sharing your experience. At Chuck Jones Automotive, we always strive to provide honest and reliable service backed by industry standards and a warranty. When vehicles come in with aftermarket modifications that may impact performance or reliability, our goal is to ensure a lasting and correct repair. In this case, our recommendation was to return the air intake system to stock specifications, as aftermarket setups—especially ones that require unconventional mounting—can sometimes lead to recurring issues. While we understand that modifications can enhance performance, our approach prioritizes consistency, manufacturer guidelines, and long-term dependability for our customers. We’re glad that you were able to find a solution that worked for you, and we appreciate the opportunity to inspect the vehicle. If you ever need assistance in the future, we’re happy to help!
